Interview With Jennifer Ramrattan

Tell us a little about yourself and your background?

My interest in writing began in the fourth grade.  At the age of ten, I started to write short stories to share with my class at show and tell.  I married my high school sweet heart and now have three kids, four dogs, and a turtle.

What were you like at school?

I was a very shy person in school and didn’t say much.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

My main focus right now is to find an agent.  I want someone to fall in love with my book like I have.  I am looking into making a life long career out of my writing skills, and hopefully building a life long career with an agent.

Which writers inspire you?

J.K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, Lowis Lowery, and Mary Shelley

So, what have you written?

I have written four novels.  I can wright under any genre, which is fun to do.

What genre are your books?

I enjoy writing in all genre’s especially anything involving science fiction or the supernatural.

What draws you to this genre?

My husband is truly my muse.

How much research do you do?

I do a great amount of research before writing, structuring real events, people and places within my novels.

When did you decide to become a writer?

I have enjoyed writing since the fourth grade.  I wrote my first novel at the age of nineteen.  By the age of twenty three I had already written three unpublished novels.  Writer’s aren’t born, their made.  It’s a skill that needs to be crafted into greatness.

Why do you write?

I honestly enjoy writing.  It makes me happy.  I am very passionate about what I write.

Do you write every day, 5 days a week or as and when?

I write two hours a day, everyday.  It’s something I look forward to doing.

Do you write on a typewriter, computer, dictate or longhand?

My computer.

Where do the your ideas come from?

I am easily inspired by my surroundings.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?

Majority of the time I sit in front of the computer completely blank and start typing.  My mind journeys far beyond my feet can take me.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

Pitching my story.

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?

Watching it come to an end.

What is the easiest thing about writing?

When I write I feel like a bird soaring through the sky. Freedom…

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

I can write a whole novel in a week.  Now to edit and revise, that usually takes a couple of months.

For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or traditional paper/hard back books?

Both.

What book/s are you reading at present?

The Giver by Lowis Lowery.  It’s my favorite book.

Do you proofread/edit all your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

For now, I’m doing it on my own.

Do you let the book stew – leave it for a month and then come back to it to edit?

Most definetly.  I like to put my novels away for a couple of months to a year before editing again and again.

Do you have any advice for other writer’s looking for literary agents in handeling rejection?

Don’t give up.  A thousand “no’s”, means your “Yes” is out there somewhere.

How can readers discover more about you and your work?
